During my senior year at the University of Pittsburgh, my professor and mentor, Audrey Murrell, proposed that my independent study research be focused on the topic of the “tempered radical”. Part of my research would involve interviewing female executives across western pennsylvania about their achievements and career journey. Until today, I had not reflected on this subject in some time but I came across this insight published by Catalyst. I am confident that this advice can serve many women in corporate america.
“Debra Meyerson’s research on “tempered radicals,” who are “people who want to succeed in their organizations yet want to live by their values or identities, even if they are somehow at odds with the dominant culture of their organizations.” In other words, tempered radicals rock the boat—without falling out.
Set a purpose. Get power. And if you do not feel you have meaningful institutional support or clout, mount your own gender equity campaign: Refer business to women, mentor a man, or become a role model for other women.”
I think that YOU are always capable of controlling your influence, your career outcomes and your environment when you recognize you have to role model the culture you believe in. Be true to yourself, express your opinion with respect to others, put the effort in and demonstrate your commitment to a shared goal and the rest will fall in place. It just takes the time, the energy and the will to keep at it.
