Yes, free business cards! There is about a $3 shipping fee (varies depending where you live) but there are a few steps required to get this deal. First, start an account on Internmatch, if you don’t have one already. This site is really useful, so I suggest using your primary e-mail address. After Internmatch, redirect yourself to Moo’s homepage by clicking here (a link on one of Internmatch’s articles).

The following advice was a featured chapter a book that you MUST pick up if you are looking for some great career tips: Getting from College to Career by Lindsey Pollak. Here are my instructions for building your professional portfolio aka BRAG BOOK!

JOAN K. SNYDER’S BRILLIANT BRAG BOOK INSTRUCTIONS

Your brag book should include the following sections, ideally marked with page separators:

Personal Statement

Buy a binder with a clear plastic sheet on the cover so you can insert a cover page of your own design. To create a generic brag book, this can be a cover with your name and contact information. If you are creative, you can design a more artistic cover. If you are using the brag book to bring to an interview for a specific job, Joan recommends making the cover a “personal statement”—a short paragraph outlining your talents, skills and experience and why you are a good fit for the particular job to which you’re applying. “This introduces what you plan to do with the rest of the book,” explains Joan. If you prefer a binder without a plastic cover, then simply include the personal statement as the first page of your book.

2. Résumé

3. Academic Accomplishments

Include any or all of the following:

College transcript, if you have a strong GPA

Copies of any awards you’ve won: academic honors (such as Dean’s List), scholarships, grants—include a color photocopy of the actual award certificate or a photo of you accepting the award with a caption about what the recognition means

Copies of outstanding papers you’ve written, if they feel relevant to your job search, such as a business plan if you are applying to corporate jobs, or press releases if you are applying for jobs in PR

Information from courses you took or conferences attended outside of the school curriculum

Information or course work from study abroad programs or special degrees

A list of your “five most inspiring books”—this is Joan’s unique idea. She includes a list of the business books that most inspired her to pursue a business career, along with a paragraph about why these are her favorites. (If you’re curious, here’s a brief sample: Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People; Daniel Goldman’s Emotional Intelligence; Robin Gerber’s Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way.)

4. Leadership Experience

Next, include a summary of any leadership positions you’ve held, with examples. This could include:

Certificates or letters of acceptance from any leadership training programs you’ve attended

Flyers, programs, web page printouts, or other documents listing you as the president of a school club or the leader of a committee or volunteer effort

Flyer or program from any event where you spoke on a panel or gave a presentation

5. Work Experience.

Here you are giving detailed examples of the work experience listed on your résumé; this is what makes that document really come alive. In this section you’ll want to include any examples of work you completed in various positions, and feedback you received. Your goal is to show how the work you’ve accomplished is transferable to the work you want to do in your career. Include any of the following:

A blurb about each company you worked or interned for, along with a list of your major accomplishments (more detailed than the bullet points appearing on your résumé)

Feedback reports

Special assignments you completed (spreadsheets, press releases, newsletter articles, reports, etc.)

Recommendation letters (addressed “To Whom It May Concern”), from summer jobs, part-time jobs, internships, etc.

Visuals from any job—photographs of work you completed, pie charts, PowerPoint slides, etc. According to Joan, “People love visuals! And, it breaks up the book if you include color.”

6. Community Service/Volunteer Experience

According to Joan, this section “demonstrates a community-minded commitment and will emphasize your values, self motivation, and social consciousness.” As with the above categories, you can include reference letters, feedback reports, lists of transferable skills you developed through your volunteer work, flyers or brochures from events in which you participated, work examples from special assignments, and photos from events.

7. PR

Have you received any press—a school newspaper story about your winning touchdown? A local newspaper article about a scholarship you won or a community service project you spearheaded? School websites with your photo or a quote? This is the place for any media coverage you’ve received, no matter how small it may seem to you. Show that you are “known” in your community, whether it’s your hometown, your school, or the web.

This is a great section in which to include printouts of any impressive online content you created in Tip #19, “Shine Online.”

8. Conclusion

In this final, optional section of your Brag Book, Joan recommends concluding with a statement that positions you in relationship to whatever job you are applying for. This means that you’ll change this last page every time you show the book to a different company or networking contact. Joan calls this “The Why”—why are you the right person for the job or company in question? This should be in the format of a paragraph or two, perhaps with a few bullet points outlining the top reasons why you should be hired.

Again, don’t worry if you don’t have everything listed above. Your Brag Book is unique to you, and no one will have every item I suggested above. Even if your book is quite thin, it’s helpful just to have all of your experience and accomplished organized in one place. Here is how I recommend making use of your Brag Book once you compile it:

Only use your book in person. A brag book is not a résumé that can be emailed around—it’s a sales document that needs you to present it. Some people may find the book overwhelming if it’s not accompanied by a real, live person. Be judicious with the ways and times you pull out the book. It’s not an everyday tool, but a “secret weapon” for your biggest and most desired opportunities. “This is your closer,” says Joan. “I often leave it behind after an interview, rather than going through it in a meeting.”

Save everything. Your Brag Book is a work in progress. Continue to add to it throughout your career. Joan recently used her book to win a big promotion.

Create a Table of Contents. Write down the order you put things in so you don’t recreate the wheel every time you want to create a new Brag Book.

Make professional copies. “Go to Kinko’s and make this look phenomenal!” advises Joan. If any documents or clippings are frayed or difficult to read, take the time to make nice color photocopies. You can even consider binding your Brag Book instead of using a three-ring binder. The more professional the opportunities you’re applying for, the more professional your book should be.

Put your Brag Book online. If you want, you can even scan every document and make your book into a website—the possibilities are endless. This is a great option if you want a job in web design or technology—it’s another way to show your skills.

I know that putting together a Brag Book sounds like a lot of work, but once you have it, it’s an incredible sales tool that you can use for the rest of your career. So, don’t be shy—go ahead and show your stuff!

Hesselbein won the gold medal in the Memoir/Biography category for her 2011 autobiography, My Life in Leadership: The Journey and Lessons Learned Along the Way.

“Leadership is needed more than ever in these challenging times and on this journey there could be no better guide than Frances Hesselbein.”

Alan Mulally, President and CEO, Ford Motor Company, on the book’s publication said, “Thank you so much Frances, for your very special gift of a life dedicated to service and continuous improvement! You inspire us all to be better leaders.”

According to author Jim Collins, “Frances teaches us that one of the greatest sources of energy is leadership done in the spirit of service.”

Hesselbein Institute board member and founder of Teleos Leadership Institute, Annie McKee adds, “Leadership is needed more than ever in these challenging times and on this journey there could be no better guide than Frances Hesselbein.”

Hesselbein was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States of America’s highest civilian honor, in 1998 by President Clinton. The award recognized her leadership as CEO of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. from 1976–1990, as well as her role as the founding president of the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, which is today The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute.

Jenkins Group founder Jerrold Jenkins, whose company presents the Awards, says, “This year more than ever, the Axiom Award winners represent knowledge that will help businesses survive and thrive, and also give young people advice and inspiration from the world’s best business minds.”

Hesselbein is editor-in-chief of the award-winning quarterly journal Leader to Leader. She is the co-editor of 27 books in 30 languages and authored Hesselbein on Leadership and, in 2011, My Life in Leadership.

Joan Snyder Kuhl, associate director for training and development at Forest Laboratories and the youngest member in the history of the Board of Governors for the Institute, concludes, “There are very few visible leaders who live by example as Frances does. She shares the personal stories of her life and as CEO of the Girl Scouts which inspired the person she has become today. Her book will encourage emerging leaders to discover that leadership is a journey not a destination.”

The conclusions of this article:

Leadership has never been easy. But I suspect it was simpler in an era when leaders could count on superior information access, reverence for their institutions, and strong moral bearings to assemble greater followership. Conditions have changed to make leadership harder. “We are experiencing a demand for new types of skills and sacrifices in C-level executives that many are not prepared to bring to the table.“

offer yet another piece of evidence that supports why Millennials can be the leaders that save our future. Emerging young leaders can be trained now on techniques to enhance focus through simplifying the abdunant data at their fingertips. I would urge companies to invest in leadership training for high potential young professionals who can learn to build a vision with value based principles. This will ultimately inspire those they will lead in the organization and help rebuild the reputation of traditional companies.

There are two very important gifts that the University of Pittsburgh gave me: life-long friendships and the courage to achieve my goals. Growing up in a small town in Eastern Pennsylvania, I dreamed about attending Pitt and having the city as my campus. I set my sights on Pitt in eighth grade when my parents visited the city in hopes of transferring in their jobs as air traffic controllers. Even though we never moved, I knew Pitt would be the only school I would every apply to!

Every day, I am reminded of a fond memory: my Spanish class in the Cathedral, late nights in the Student Government Board (SGB) office in the William Pitt Union, 7 a.m. Blue and Gold Meetings at the old office on Craig Street, half-price deals at Mad Mex and Fuel and Fuddle at 11 p.m., the 1997 game against Miami in Pitt Stadium when we stormed the field, driving the homecoming car during halftime of the very last time Pitt played (shutout!) Penn State to the day I received my degree in Mellon Arena alongside my family and friends.

My experiences living in the freshman towers, being a student in the College of Business Administration, and serving as a student leader across campus organizations afforded me the opportunity to grow a diverse group of friendships. A defining moment in my student life came as I ran for SGB president. I never dreamed I would have the support to win. It forever changed my self-confidence along with the memories I have of the incredible friends who stood out in the cold passing flyers and urging voters for support. On election day, I remember seeing advertisements in the Pitt News from many diverse organizations declaring their support for me, including the Black Action Society, Asian Students Association, Rainbow Alliance, Campus Women’s Organization, College of Business Administration, fraternities, and sororities. My roommates, friends, and many classmates were all with me when the last vote was counted and I was named SGB President in 2000.

Chancellor Nordenberg had a profound influence on me as someone who I felt encouraged my confidence, conviction, and leadership style. The chancellor along with the many gracious alumni, faculty and administrators who took an interest in my future, inspired me to achieve my potential inside and outside of the classroom.

I’ve been given so many gifts from Pitt, but in the last couple years I did lose one. My friend Margarita Sarmiento, who was President of the Asian Student Alliance, was one of my most loyal friends on campus. She inspired all of us who knew her to approach life without fear, welcome new friends without judgement, and live every day louder than the day before. In memory of Margarita, my friends and I started a scholarship at Pitt in her name and I hope the students it supports will carry her spirit of inclusivity and generosity. I also hope more alumni will contribute to this gift to the University in honor of her life.

(To donate, visit Pitt’s online giving form, go to page 2, and choose the Margarita Sarmiento Asian Student Alliance Fund.)

Sometimes, you can get so lost in your job search that you forget that it’s not just about you. Rather, it’s about finding a great employer who’s excited about hiring interns – and ultimately, YOU. Hear from leadership and Millennial generation expert Joan Snyder about her experience hiring an Urban Intern, and see our takeaways below.

“Recently, I published my first Urban Intern job posting seeking a “Leadership and Millenial Research Assistant”. The turnaround response rate for my posting was beyond my expectations. Within a couple days, I had over a dozen applications! I was so impressive with the diverse talent who expressed interest in working with me and their thorough representation of their qualifications. Once I identified the top candidates, I sent a follow up assignment requesting that they write a response to a question about how Millenials could provide a solution to an upcoming leadership challenge. The creative and passionate replies were inspiring as well as supported with statistics and references. I wish I could hire each and every candidate who responded. Ultimately, I found a recent college graduate who shares my passion for inspiring emerging leaders and is motivated to help me build my business.”

So, what can a candidate glean from this? The most important things you can do as you present yourself to employers are:

Be quick and eager to apply. Employers are often looking for someone to start yesterday. The first and most enthusiastic responses are given priority, and they are appreciated by the business owner who’s looking to move fast.

Show your stuff, well. If you happen to be applying for a gig that your resume does not totally support, but you’re excited about it anyway, explain why your diverse background would be a benefit to that employer. Portray your qualifications thoroughly, but at the same time, get your point across without writing a novel.

Expect homework. Many employers will give you a mini test to filter through their list of candidates. Treat this assignment like it’s your first on the job.

Demonstrate your creativity and passion. Your assignment is your chance to showcase your creativity, your passion, your ability to do your research, and your energy for the job. Seeing all of this, employers will have comfort that you’ll be easy to train and will have as much enthusiasm for the business as they do.

Plebes from West Point on Leading by Example:

On Friday, February 3rd I had the privilege of spending time with ten West Point Hesselbein Scholars, a group of outstanding minority cadets who are the first Hesselbein Scholars to be appointed. West Point is the oldest continuously operated military post in the country and voted America’s Best College by Forbes. The Plebes[1], West Point term for 1st year students, shared their thoughts about leadership with myself, Frances and several other thought leaders. The stories they shared about their basic training is certainly not your typical college student experience. “We don’t really have privileges…we are learning discipline” said one cadet. We launched into a conversation about leadership and the reality that not every cadet at West point is a ready born leader. Most are there because they believe west point can develop them into great leaders. It’s startling to reflect on the weight of their brave decision to attend West Point knowing that upon graduation they will not begin an entry level office job. They will be sent to some of the most dangerous parts of the world to offer their service and leadership for their country.

We explored the topic more in terms of how the students felt they can influence one another while not being in an official position of authority as a Plebe. We asked the group “What do you do if you see a fellow plebe who isn’t meeting expectations, doesn’t have their shoes shined, getting to class on time, not completing their assignments….”

This was one Cadet’s response: “You don’t really say anything, it’s just the way you act…how you are.” You can hear more of his words in the following video clip: http://vimeo.com/36556469

Leading by Example

This is literally straight from one of Frances Hesselbein’s greatest leadership lessons. Leadership is a matter of how to be not how to do. If the cadets we spoke to are naturally gravitating to a level of behaviors and actions that are grounded in values, principles and beliefs then what can we do to help other young people also see the power of their selves in influencing others?

My connection to West Point is through accompanying Frances while she served as Chair for Leadership Studies and made regular visits to the campus to conduct leadership dialogues with the students. The following excerpt from West Point’s website captures their philosophy on Leadership: Leadership is what you are here to learn at West Point—the qualities of character and mind that will make you fit to command a platoon, and beyond that, perhaps, a company, a battalion, or, if you leave the military, a corporation, a foundation, a department of government. .

This reminds me of another great Hesselbein lesson which was gleaned from her time with Peter Drucker. You have to see yourself Life-Size. You have to recognize your own strength, your presence, your power of influence and how remarkable your own contributions are to the mission. The young men I met last week continue to inspire my thoughts and actions. I am grateful for their service.

[1] The “plebe” year is the beginning of the journey for the young men and women who have accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. It is a year in which the first year cadets are challenged to learn and grow. The change begins on a physical and military level beginning with CBT – Cadet Basic Training and continues during the academic year as they are taught according to the Thayer Method – an entirely new way or learning for many of them.
